Chapter Twelve
Anette sat at the writing desk in the drawing room as she debated about what she should write down. The ideas kept whirling in her head, but she was determined to write this book. She just needed to start writing and hope the ideas kept coming.
Why was writing a book so hard, she thought to herself. She wanted to write a book that people would want to read. What if she was overthinking this? What if she just wrote a book that she would want to read?
Barrow stepped into the room and met her gaze. âLady Rushcliffe and Lady Eugenie have come to call. Would you care for me to show them in?â
Anette perked up in her seat. This was just the distraction that she needed. âYes, please.â
It was but a moment later when her friends stepped into the room.
Rising, Anette greeted them with a smile on her face. âEnid. Eugenie. What a pleasant surprise,â she said.
Enid glanced at the writing desk and responded, âI hope we did not come at a bad time.â
âNot at all,â Anette rushed to assure them. âI welcome the distraction. It is far preferable to staring at a blank page and hoping I can fill it with words.â
With an amused look, Enid said, âI take it that your book is not going well.â
âNo, but it will come to me. It has to,â Anette remarked. âI just need to find a topic that I am passionate about.â
âI daresay that you are passionate about everything,â Enid teased.
Anette laughed before turning her attention towards Eugenie. âHow are you faring?â she asked.
Eugenie smiled, but it didnât quite meet her eyes. âI am well,â she replied, her voice lacking any real conviction.
Not wanting to press her, Anette gestured towards the settees. âShall we sit down and have some tea?â
âThat sounds lovely,â Enid said.
After they were all situated, Anette took a moment to pour the tea and handed her guests their cups and saucers.
Anette took a sip of her tea as she studied Eugenie. She looked lovely in a dark maroon gown, but she was curious as to why she wasnât mourning her sister. It had only been a short time ago that her younger sister had been killed. But it was none of her business and she didnât dare bring up bad memories for her friend.
Eugenie lowered her cup to her lap. âThis tea is delicious. Thank you.â
âYou are welcome,â Anette acknowledged.
âI bet you are wondering why I am not properly mourning my sister,â Eugenie said, running a hand down the length of her gown.
Had she been so transparent? âI suppose I am,â she admitted.
âMy uncle was insistent that we do not mourn Charlotte since she confessed to murdering the late Lord Rushcliffe,â Eugenie revealed. âI do not feel the same but he is my guardian.â
âA lousy one,â Enid muttered.
âThat he is, but I do not dare cross him,â Eugenie shared. âHe has a temper that I do not wish to stoke.â
Anette offered Eugenie an encouraging smile. âYou can still mourn your sister in other ways.
